Intrepid Spirit is a military action-adventure novel that attempts to offer something more than other novels in that genre. It is the novelization of a screenplay I wrote in 2006 that was inspired by the events of 9/11. It intends to entertain, yes, but also to be thought provoking and insightful regarding one of the most important issues of our time. Whether or not it achieves those goals is up to the reader.
As a fan of the era tall ships and, in particular, the history of U.S.S. Constitution, “Old Ironsides,” I knew the ship, and her sister ships, marked the origins of the U.S. Navy and were built specifically to do battle with the Barbary Coast pirates, the Islamic terrorists of the early 19th century, but who had been plying their trade for centuries.
The fact that Constitution, the oldest ship afloat, still being a commissioned U.S. warship provided the opportunity to place her in a modern-day story involving the descendants of those north African pirates. The unspoken message of that coincidence is that, in effect, the Barbary Coast Wars never really ended. I could not imagine while writing the screenplay that the most important plot component, the initiation of a world-wide jihad, would unfold in such a parallel fashion as it has in 2023 with the attack on Israel by Hamas in Gaza and the flames that have erupted around the world in the immediate aftermath. At this writing, those events are still progressing. Together with the events of the recent past, as depicted in the articles, they make the words of the antagonist in Intrepid Spirit, Colonel Farzad, the Iranian leader of the aforementioned plot, seem prescient.
Tying the past to the present was a goal of the novel and, to that end, embedded in the story are a number of references to the relevant history and current events. The message in Intrepid Spirit is that the threat represented by the goals of Islam are real. Current events have proven them so. This blog is about those events from about the date of publication to the date of this posting, 12/11/23.
From about the time Intrepid Spirit was to be released, I began collecting articles on incidents of Islamic terrorism around the world and at home. The article links in this blog are by no means a comprehensive collection. They are simply those that came to my attention from sources that I regularly view, but without a concerted effort on my part. Nonetheless, if the number of articles seems high to the reader, and if the incidences covered in them were previously unknown to the reader, I suggest it indicates the news sources that have been relied upon by the reader have not sufficiently covered this important topic.
Nonetheless, hundreds of articles have been collected since March of 2022. The volume alone has made organizing them a challenge. I ask for some tolerance in that regard, but I add that I have saved the topic of articles on the aftermath and ongoing crisis in the middle-east for the end of each regional blog section, knowing full well it is not the end of the story. Indeed, at this writing in December of 2023, as one would imagine, the internet is flooded with relevant articles. From time to time, I offer introductions to specific article links and add interjections and perspectives.
History, Overviews & Context
Author Raymond Ibrahim offers a review of the history of Islam to shed light on current events, namely, acts of terror by Islamist extremists. Are they “extremists,” or are their acts simply a continuation of many centuries of similar acts by followers of Mohammed against non-Islamic peoples of the world?
Are there peaceful Muslims? Surely, but does that make Islam “the religion of peace?” Ibrahim delves into the actions of apologists, including in America, for the acts of Islamic terrorists and shines a spotlight on that question. His works provide a historic context that can aid us in understanding past and current events. Ibrahim is not the only historian who has contributed to our understanding of Islam, as you will see below:

At the height of the crisis in Intrepid Spirit, a character in the story, a U.S. government official, compares the problem of Islamic terrorism in the U.S. with that of European nations. His message is that Europe’s problems are even greater than our own, 9/11 notwithstanding. The following numerous articles support that notion. While I sometimes provide a short synopsis of an article, the headlines and links themselves often include enough text to get a sense of their content.

The story below references the work of Rich Higgins and his book, The Memo (Calamo Press, 2020). Following are two excerpts from the article that are particularly on point, though I recommend a read of the entire piece:
“Higgins was convinced that George W. Bush and those military and State Department officials who parroted his position were colossally ignorant when they asserted that Islam is a Religion of Peace. Higgins was well informed about Islam and Islamist fanatics, and he knew that the adherents of Islam were committed to conquest and terror — obliged by their religion to wage war against the infidel and to enable by force and political action the worldwide Caliphate.”
“The experience for Higgins in Iraq committed him to forever consider the “religion of peace” position to be insane and counterproductive. Higgins also was convinced by his experience that Islamic doctrine would always be the enemy of Western Civilization. There was no place in his vision of the world for a Muslim deception that they were people of peace.”

One of the goals of Colonel Farzad’s plot is to activate the many terrorist cells in America and around world. There are so-called “lone wolves,” but also organized bodies, funded, trained and dedicated. Additionally, there are many examples of those who, while not being direct participants in acts of terror, nevertheless express support for those acts. So too, there are many accounts of the media, and our government, ignoring the sources- and motivations for acts of terror and of simply expressing a misunderstanding of the nature of the threat, whether through ignorance or pursuant to an agenda. The headline of the article that immediately follows is frightening in and of itself and strongly suggests we need no longer speculate on the presence of Islamic terrorists within our borders. We can simply take their word for it.

Post-Hamas Attack on Israel, 10/23

Readers of Intrepid Spirit will notice the remarkable parallel with the story, likewise with articles reporting on events in other countries. To be embedded with Hamas during the invasion, it stands to reason that he had to have been with them before the invasion that resulted in some 1,400 Israeli civilians massacred. That means CNN had to have known about the invasion before it happened, possibly even before Israel knew, but it gets worse. As a photo in the story shows, the reporter participated in the assault to the extent of carrying a hand grenade. The story also identifies news outlets Reuters and The New York Times as using reporters embedded with Hamas at that time, as well as photos taken by them of the massacre.

Following the stabbings of Irish children by an Algerian immigrant, the slogan, “Irish Lives Matter” has been seen painted as graffiti in Ireland, as the above story relates. As mentioned earlier, the villain in Intrepid Spirit gloats about the successes Muslims have had in getting governments, particularly in Europe, to outlaw speech, let alone actions, deemed “hateful” to Muslims. There couldn’t be a better example of that success than the story above. Nor could host and columnist Auron MacIntyre’s response be more accurate; “If saying “Irish lives matter” in Ireland is a hate crime that’s the definition of a conquered nation.”
As in the U.S., and as part of Colonel Farzad’s invective, Ireland’s efforts to be “inclusive” and accepting of Muslim immigrants has resulted in some attaining positions of authority in that government. The two articles below are examples of that point and show the effect on the political landscape of that nation. Both stories follow demonstrations in Ireland after the stabbings of children mentioned above. The first of them below recounts an elected official’s view that the demonstrators are “terrorists.” The second, by a different official, an immigrant who was elected to public office, saying they should be “shot in the head.”
Also, in copycat fashion, Ireland is now emulating its neighbor, England, by defining “hate speech” and prosecuting the purveyors. Most surprising is a slogan they have identified as illegal.
