Ironically reminiscent of the ship’s 19^th century maiden mission against the ancestors of today’s Islamic terrorists, the Barbary Coast pirates, Constitution emerges as a significant character in the story, eerily intervening in the transformation of Redding and, ultimately, the outcome of the battle itself.  Along the way, the alpha-male Redding engages in a battle-of-the-sexes with Dr. Miriam Hanna, an alluring civilian shipmate and intellectual who can hold her own in a debate – or a fist fight.
